War Dance - Sion Airshow, Switzerland

By Video Team September 25, 2017

I didn't think it were possible for any piece of modern footage to come close to the chance moment in time video, Mach Loop - Grim Reapers. But I think their is definitely a new contender. At the very least it could be put in the same category of rare moments.  Pound for pound, this display of a Swiss F/A-18 Hornet at last weeks Breitlin Sion Airshow, filmed by none other than the talented Elwyn R, almost finds itself forging a new genre of visual aviation right before your very eyes. Now firstly on its own merit this display is probably one of the more elegant displays you will see but add to the stage the incredibly unique and perception altering vantage point that ebbs and flows between, birds eye and eye level viewing that has never been seen before in such clarity and focus oh and its also nestled in the heart of Swiss mountain tops. If you were like me and somehow had not seen footage of Sion before this clip I can only describe it as like lightning striking twice and one hell of a double hit.

The Hornet seems take on the persona of a graceful dancer of the most accomplished kind and performs effortless turns and tumbles that if it weren't so utterly beautiful you would almost describe them as clumsy and lazy. Then in the blink of an eye the pilot transforms into the most aggressive and technical of creatures cutting through the skies with ultimate precision and intensity. It is hard to decide which is the defining moment but considering I am still feeling the after-glow effects of my first view, ill just say one more thing. Take your time, no distractions and simply watch and enjoy. Classical music is an incredible accompaniment I am just discovering as I watch it again. No surprises there. Match made in heaven. Engines still on of course.
