Victory Over Malta

Siege of Malta - Grand Harbour, Malta, 20th December 1941

On the morning of 20th December, Charles “Tich” Palliser of no. 249 RAF Squadron flying a borrowed cannon-armed Hurricane MK11c night fighter brings down a Junkers Ju88 high over Grand Harbour whilst other members of the squadron attend to the Bf109 escort.

PALLISER George Charles Calder, Flight Lieutenant, DFC, RAF.

Charles Palliser was born 11 January 1919 in Cleveland, Yorkshire and joined the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve in June 1939 and was called up on the outbreak of war. He was posted as a Sergeant to 17 Sqdn. in August 1940, then to 43 Sqdn. and finally 249 Sqdn. flying Hurricanes. On the 14 September he scored his first victory with this unit and by November had made six more claims. On 5 December 1940 at the end of a long patrol he was attacked by two Bf 109's and crash landed near Stanford-le-Hope, Kent unhurt. He was commissioned in April 1941 and sailed for Gibraltar with the Squadron aboard HMS Furious, transferring there to HMS Ark Royal from which the Squadron flew off to Malta on 21 May, he was 22. Here he made five more claims. In January 1942 he was posted to 605 Sqdn. as a flight commander receiving the DFC. On 26 February he left the island for South Africa to become an instructor. After a time in hospital January-May 1944 he returned to the UK as an instructor reaching Al Instructor category. After this he had various postings and in October 1946 left the RAF. He moved to Australia in 1982 and settled in Melbourne. He is officially credited with 4 and 7 shared aircraft destroyed, 2 shared probable and 3 damaged. One of “The Few'*.

PARKINSON Colin Henry, Flight Lieutenant, DFC, RAAF

Born 29 December 1916, Drumoyne, Sydney, New South Wales and joined the RAAF on 11 November 1940. After training, he was posted to the UK where he served briefly as a sergeant with 56 and 19 Sqdns. In May 1942 Parkinson was posted to Malta flying Spitfire BR376 off HMS Eagle on the 9 June at the beginning of "Operation Salient'. He was posted to 603 Sqdn. as a flight sergeant sharing his first victory on 23 June. On 19 October 1942, he received the DFC and ended his tour of Malta in November returning to Australia where he served with 457 Sqdn. before commanding the RAAF Chemical Research Unit during 1944. He left the RAAF in November 1945. Parkinson is officially credited with 8 and 1 shared aircraft destroyed, 3 and 1 shared probable and 7 damaged.
